Pediatricians Can Be First Responders for Preventing Substance Use

The vast majority of children under 18 saw a doctor or other health care professional during the past year. The critical role that pediatricians can play in promoting behavioral health has been increasingly recognized. Unfortunately, new research shows that this prevention and intervention strategy has not been as fully embraced and as widely implemented by pediatricians as one might hope. This report discusses the need for routine screening among adolescents and describes new research findings on how often screening is occurring within pediatric settings.
